Agile Coaching Deployment
Luxury vehicles mean prestige. It means performance, advanced technology, and high-spec visual appeal. Quality and an ability to innovate at pace are key competition factors in this sector but can be difficult to instil on a large scale.
The Challenge: Embedding Agile Framework
The client had established an Agile delivery framework. Scrum was used to experimentally develop various innovative in-vehicle and driver assistance services. Agile scaling practices were employed to align teams on shared goals and integrate services to create the whole driving experience.
The challenge? New frameworks are hard to embed!
There are new competencies to develop. New ways of thinking about how to solve problems. New techniques. New leadership styles. New behaviours. Tendencies to revert to old behaviours, especially under pressure.
There are people and organisation change factors such as personal values, personal concerns, and the different rates at which we all meet change.
All these challenges were present in a context of time pressure to create results.
Working with remote teams and a complex, multi-layered management structure provided additional challenge.
To meet this challenge, the client sought Agile coaching help.
Our Approach: Experienced Coaching
Lean Tree joined the program and provided experienced coaching to help executives, managers, leaders, Scrum Masters, Product Owners, and developers adapt to the new ways of working, develop the new competencies, and expedite value.
Success would pave the way for the large-scale adoption of the framework and ensure its longevity.
Lean Tree deployed two coaching teams. One team focused on executive coaching. The other team focussed on the Scrum teams and the teams that supported those teams with alignment and integration at scale.
The executive coaching team helped embed organisational agility with the leadership styles required to effectively lead agile product development.
The development coaching team used its knowledge and awareness of people change factors to help teams bring agile product development to life.
Both coaching teams used multiple methods to support the change, including learning materials, training events, discovery workshops, team coaching, individual coaching, and communities of practice.
Learning alone is, of course, only one part of the process. Supported embedding is also key. Our coaches partnered with teams and individuals in their events and day to day work to coach and embed.
The Result: Agility Uptake
Through the work of the Lean Tree coaches, there was a 20% increase in teams working in agile ways. 15 teams received coaching in one form or another, with expertise conveyed in Scrum, Agile Leadership, and scaling practices. We delivered around 30 formal coaching sessions per week, over 1,300 sessions in total over the course of our engagement with the client.
This work made the large-scale adoption of the client’s bespoke, adaptive framework smooth, reducing lead times, increasing release frequency, and rapidly actioning feedback to maximise value.
The client is now synonymous with Agile practices, innovating effectively in the world of vehicle technology and meeting customer demands at pace.
